Communications Intern

SEAS Islands Alliance Digital Communications Internship

This internship will offer outreach and communication training with the Supporting Emerging Aquatic Scientists (SEAS) Islands Alliance and the communications team at Maryland Sea Grant (MDSG).

We are seeking undergraduate student applicants who are excited about helping share the work being done by the Alliance and helping SEAS students tell their stories online.

The intern will assist the SEAS team virtually with the following:

  • the planning, writing, and posting of program content on the Alliance website and social media platforms
  • working with SEAS hubs and students to plan and create content for the website and social media accounts
  • building an online editorial calendar for monthly content planning

Applicants should have an interest in writing for the web, website content editing, and planning and developing social media content for different platforms, with a focus on Twitter and Instagram. The internship will include opportunities to grow and refine writing skills by working with experienced editors. Motivation and desire to learn more about digital communication principles are the most important attributes we were looking for in applicants.

This internship is with SEAS, which is part of NSF INCLUDES (Inclusion Across the Nation of Communities of Learners of Underrepresented Discoverers in Engineering and Science), a comprehensive national initiative designed to enhance U.S. leadership in discoveries and innovations by focusing on diversity, inclusion and broadening participation in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) at scale.

The internship will be fully virtual with the MDSG office, and overseen by their assistant director of communications, Lisa Tossey.

The internship pays $15/hour and will have a flexible schedule that averages 5 hours per week.

Application review will begin Friday, October 1, 2021, and the position will start in early October.

To apply, please send a cover letter, outlining your interest in the internship, and a résumé to Lisa Tossey at tossey@umd.edu
