Student Spotlight: Tiffany Del Valle Gonzalez

Tiffany Gonzalez sits atop a sign for the University of the Virgin IslandsHello, my name is Tiffany, and I am part of the Puerto Rico and US Virgin Islands (USVI) hub!

I am originally from the beautiful island of Puerto Rico. There, I became a member of the Centro TORTUGA project, which is now known as the Puerto Rican hub of the SEAS Islands Alliance. I completed my B.S. in biology at the Gurabo campus of Universidad Ana G. Méndez in Puerto Rico. Currently, I am completing a master’s in marine and environmental science at the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI), where I am a SEAS Islands Alliance graduate fellow.

I am very enthusiastic and passionate about sea turtles and sandy beaches, and am a member of the turtle team at UVI. I will be working with Dr. Paul Jobsis, acting director of the Center for Marine & Environmental Studies, in assessing the abundance of marine debris on known and potential turtle nesting beaches here in the USVI. I expect to learn and to work with sea turtles across the these islands and to connect data collected from here with data from Puerto Rico.

It is a privilege for me to be part of this program. I have mentors from Puerto Rico, Maryland, and the U.S Virgin Islands, and I know I can count on mentorship from Guam too! The best feeling is being supported during this journey of growth within the scientific community. That is why one of my main goals as a graduate fellow is to serve as a mentor and provide guidance for other students.
